SUMMARY:Ribbon Cutting
DESCRIPTION:Carolina International School\, Cabarrus County's first public charter school\, has installed a solar array on its 82-acre campus. The 5 kilowatt pole-mounted solar panels will produce enough renewable energy to power the school's main office. The impact saves an estimated 6\,570 kilowatt hours with a potential cost savings of $750 annually. Carolina International School was awarded grants from NC GreenPower the State Employees Credit Union Foundation totaling nearly $20\,000. In addition\, the school raised $13\,170 in matching funds through the generosity of over 70 individuals and groups. The grant is part of NC GreenPower's pilot program to bring renewable energy to schools. The solar array will also provide educational opportunities for students to learn about solar power. "We are excited that the solar array reinforces one of the core focus areas of Carolina International School - environmental education and sustainability\," said David Kukielski\, head of the school. The "flipping the switch" ceremony for the solar array will be held at Carolina International School on Friday\, May 12 at 10 am\, with the public invited. The school is located at 9545 Poplar Tent Rd in Concord. Attendees are expected to include Duke Energy\, the Advanced Energy Board of Directors\, NC GreenPower's Board of Directors\, the NC Utilities Commission and the State Employees Credit Union Foundation (SECU).
